Consumers increase their demand for organic, healthy and environmentally friendly products year after year, both in terms of their ingredients and their packaging. This trend is here to stay, so it is not surprising that the biodegradable packaging market is set to reach $126 billion by 2025 (Biodegradable Packaging Market 2020-2025, Mordor Intelligence).

Making small changes in products’ packaging is no longer enough. According to Mintel, 39% of US consumers indicate that brands should do more to create environmentally friendly packaging. Furthermore, in the UK, 38% of consumers believe that it is worth paying more for products in sustainable packaging.

The consumer mandate is clear: companies must act thinking about what is best for the planet and not just follow the herd. The fight against plastic is now a fixture and increases the relevance of creating biodegradable alternatives. According to researchers from the University of Georgia, 8.3 billion tons of plastic had been generated by 2015 and, of these tons, 6.3 billion ended their life as waste, of which 79% were dumped in landfills and even in the natural environment and only 9% was recycled. If waste continues to be generated at the current rate, it is expected that in 2050 around 20 billion tons of plastic will end up in landfills or in the natural environment.
